Tis the season for year-end lists & countdowns, here’s are my favourites from the year that was 2015.
1. Frank Turner Positive Songs for Negative People
There are SO many sides to Frank Turner. He can write a punk rock song and make you jump up and down for an entire concert, while he can just as easily capture your heart with his own. He makes you want to laugh with him, cry with him, and maybe bash a guitar over someone’s head too. Frank never disappoints, live or recorded and lucky for us, he’s coming to London to play London Music Hall February 23rd with Northcote.
I especially loved Frank’s message on Facebook after the Paris Attacks:
Eagles of Death Metal Zipper Down
Although their name has become associated with the Paris Attacks, I’ve been in love with this band since 2008, eagerly awaiting their groovy hip-shaking new release all year. This album has been a constant on my record player ever since release day! It’s a favourite to wake up to, Jesse ‘Boots’ Electric and Josh ‘Baby Duck’ Homme will put you in a good mood to start any day. While we’ve seen the band members discussing all sorts of horror all over the news lately, let’s remember what they are known for, an incredible sense of humour both on and off the stage!
This is actually inside the record ha ha!
Danko Jones Fire Music
The new record is exactly as you would expect – loud, catchy and impossible to ignore (especially in a vehicle…he might get you a ticket). Instead of dancing around the subject of a broken heart or a cheater, he’ll just say it with songs like I Will Break Your Heart and She Ain’t Coming Home. Danko is also one of the most passionate musicians I have ever met, and let me explain that a bit. He LOVES the things he loves, he HATES the things he hates equally, and finds a way to tell us about them in such a well-spoken manner. I always enjoy when he drops by the studio (especially with JC) and I’m hoping we can chat with them before their show at London Music Hall January 28th ( Tickets HERE) ! Until then…
Modest Mouse Strangers to Ourselves
How can one record remind you of everything from Disco to Polka? It’s those weird combinations of sounds that I LOVE every time Modest Mouse puts out a new record, this one was a big deal because they kept us fans waiting since 2007! JEEZ.
The Standstills From The Devil’s Porch EP
WOW. I’m so happy to have discovered this band but damn, it took me TOO long. They’ve been around this area for many years in the London area, Jonny and Renee both went to school here in London. I’m actually pissed that it took me THIS long to listen to more of their music. And – let me just say this…when they stopped by the FM96 studio ahead of their show at Call the Office a few weekends ago, if you were to close your eyes, I swear Jonny’s guitar sounded like Jimmy Page at times. FABULOUS people, FABULOUS musicians.
