An Early Spring?
Most of the highest profile groundhogs have predicted an early spring, including Shubenacadie Sam of Nova Scotia and Alberta’s Balzac Billy, but Wiarton Willie says six more weeks of winter. Looks like we need a tie-breaker now that we’ve lost Winnipeg Willow…Princess Sandy Stanley was on stand-by this morning calling for early spring too.
Speaking of which, Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for tonight with more than 30 mm of rain expected by tomorrow morning which could mean late-night thunderstorms.
Does London Need a Name Change?
Remember when Loverboy’s Mike Reno cast London Ontario in a bad light in Rolling Stone??
“The good news is that I’m still touring the big cities,” Reno says. “Right now I’m in London! Bad news is, it’s London, Ontario.”
According to Former London City Councillor for Ward 6, Amir Fara-hee, we need a name change and it’s not just because of Mike Reno.
He suggests that we re-brand ourselves noting there is another London in at least eight countries including Canada & England, and recalls that Halifax and Kitchener have both successfully accomplished similar things.
“The Mayor actually underwent a complete rebranding strategy,” said Farahi. “They changed the slogan to ‘Be Bold,’ they changed the city’s name to Halifax. There were around 20,000 residents who were engaged in the process. Many, many of the residents were opposed to it.”
He also cited Kitchener as an example, as it used to be called ‘Berlin.’
Farahi has suggested “New London” as a possible name, but isn’t set on any one name. He admits there are 19 cities currently named New London in the world.
He will appear before the Corporate Services Committee on Tuesday where he will ask for a Communications Master Plan for the city so it can better sell itself to the world.
