Here at FM96 we talk a lot about a band making its live debut, playing their first show, releasing their first CD. Today, we look at a LAST, the final public appearance of FM96 frontman Freddie Mercury.
The 11th annual Brit Awards were held February 18th, 1990. There were many public rumours about his health. Privately, the band was getting ready to say goodbye to their creative leader without asking too many questions.
The band did not tour in support of their 1989 release, The Miracle. The band had already began working on an album for release the next year, Innuendo, working on a three weeks on, two weeks off schedule to work around the health problems.
At the Brit awards, 26 years ago today, this band got on stage to accept the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. While guitarist Brian May did most of the acceptance speech, this frontman was manage to lean into the mic and say Thank You…and goodnight” before walking off stage.
Nov. 22, 1991, Freddie Mercury confirmed just how bad things were, and he passed within the next 24 hours.
