Metallica‘s Master of Puppets turns 30 years old this week. Their third album was released March 3rd, 1986 and it didn’t come without it’s challenges. First and foremost, the band was committed to keeping up with the momentum from Ride The Lightning, their second album.

True or False? The band made Lars take drum lessons.
False. He did it on his own account! Lars took drum lessons to improve his timing while Kirk Hammet even went back to his old guitar teacher, Joe Satriani, for some tips. Everyone just wanted to better themselves.
True or False? Master of Puppets, the title track, was the first song written for the album.
False. Battery was the first song written.
True or False? The band’s first choice for producer on the album was Prince.
False. Their first choice was actually Geddy Lee from RUSH but their schedules didn’t work out so they went back to This time they had enough money to book hotel rooms instead of passing out on their producer’s apartment floor in sleeping bags!
True or False? They Wanted to Borrow Rick Allen’s Black Beauty drum snare he used with Def Leppard.
True. During recording everyone believed the snare drum sounded like a garbage can lid. They asked their management to get a hold of Rick Allens’s snare. He was recovering from the car accident where he lost his arm at the time, but Lars was lucky enough to find the exact snare in a Copenhagen music store at the same price from 1979!
