Happy Birthday to Queen guitarist, Brian May, 69 years young today!
Unfortunately, the most recent Brian May news revolves around TRUMP, according to Radio.com:
At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Queen’s classic “We Are the Champions” was played over the sound system. It wasn’t the first time Trump has used the song, either. He’d been using it at appearances during the primary season.
But as last night’s appearance was televised, and more people noticed it; fans took to Twitter to complain about it. Some were particularly offended given that the Republicans platform is less than friendly to the LGBT community.
While May hasn’t said anything about this latest use of the song, he did comment on it on his own website last month, saying, “My personal reaction to Donald Trump using our music … We’d never give permission. This is not an official Queen statement, but I can confirm that permission to use the track was neither sought nor given. We are taking advice on what steps we can take to ensure this use does not continue. Regardless of our views on Mr Trump’s platform, it has always been against our policy to allow Queen music to be used as a political campaigning tool. Our music embodies our own dreams and beliefs, but it is for all who care to listen and enjoy.”
UPDATE: 7/19 10:24 am ET
Queen have tweeted from their official account, with a short statement confirming that last night’s use of their music was unauthorized.
An unauthorised use at the Republican Convention against our wishes – Queen
— Queen (@QueenWillRock) July 19, 2016
Sony ATV Music, Queen’s publishing company, sent Radio.com a statement re: the RNC’s, and the Trump campaign’s, use of the song. “Sony/ATV Music Publishing has never been asked by Mr. Trump, the Trump campaign or the Trump Organization for permission to use ‘We are the Champions’ by Queen. On behalf of the band, we are frustrated by the repeated unauthorized use of the song after a previous request to desist, which has obviously been ignored by Mr. Trump and his campaign.
Queen does not want its music associated with any mainstream or political debate in any country. Nor does Queen want ‘We are the Champions’ to be used as an endorsement of Mr. Trump and the political views of the Republican Party. We trust, hope and expect that Mr. Trump and his campaign will respect these wishes moving forward.”
