Finally, All Things Must Pass, a film about the rise and fall of the Tower Records institution, will be out on DVD September 13th. I need to see this!
Tower Records was established in 1960 – eventually becoming a retail chain with 200 stores in 30 countries. By 1999 they had made $1 billion but by 2006 the company filed for bankruptcy. Most people think it’s the INTERNET that killed Tower Records, but it’s much more than that. The film is directed by Colin Hanks featuring Dave Grohl, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, to name a few.
Slash even got fired from Tower Records, after a short stint working their as a teenager. From Rolling Stone:
“The young, future Guns N’ Roses guitar hero had been arrested for stealing cassettes at the Tower in LA. Years later, he watched fans line up to buy the band’s Use Your Illusion at the exact same store.”
