What a rock & roll resume…
Matt Cameron is the drummer we know best from Soundgarden & Pearl Jam, but he’s been behind the kit for many other bands too. He was behind the kit for the first Queens of the Stone Age album and Smashing Pumpkins Adore. He’s even on a few tracks on Tonny Iommi’s solo album that came out in 2000.
Matt Cameron was born November 28th, 1962 and to help celebrate his birthday, he’s today’s 5 @ 5 theme. Make a request for a song he plays drums on!
Some things to know:
Matt Cameron was Technically Pearl Jam’s FIRST unofficial Drummer
With roots planted in two now-classic “grunge” acts, Matt Cameron has a firm spot in history as the driving force for two of the biggest bands of the ‘90s Seattle explosion. In an odd way, Cameron has always been a part of the Pearl Jam maelstrom. Originally from San Diego, Cameron spent a few years unknowingly frequenting the same concerts as a young man named Eddie Vedder. In 1990, he even helped the developing group then known as Mookie Blaylock put together a demo-tape of instrumentals (later known as “Alive”, “Once”, and “Footsteps”). Technically, Matt Cameron was the original drummer in Pearl Jam, a band that’s seen its share of skins-men over the years. For those keeping score, the Spinal Tap-like history goes as such: Matt Cameron (demo), Dave Krusen (Ten), Matt Chamberlain (touring), Dave Abbruzzese (Vs., Vitalogy), Jack Irons (No Code, Yield), and back around again to Matt Cameron (Binaural, Riot Act, present). Cameron was also the drummer on the Soundgarden/Pearl Jam project known as Temple of the Dog.
Matt Cameron’s Early Bands Had Interesting Names
Cameron’s musical career pretty much started out when with a vocal part on the song “Puberty Love,” which was on the soundtrack for Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Then he moved to Seattle in the early 1980s. He played briefly in a band called Feedback, then in 1985, he joined Skin Yard. Daniel House (future owner of C/Z Records) and Jack Endino, who were the original members, were soon joined by Cameron, who thought up the name. Later that year, singer Ben McMillan joined the fold and the original full lineup was created. The band played their first show in June of 1985, in which they were the warm-up act in a U-Men show. The band continued to record their first album in the remaining part 1985 and 1986. It was released on C/Z records in January of 1987, but Cameron had left the band prior to the record’s release.
Some Canadian Connections:
Matt Cameron appears as a guest drummer on some collaborations with the following Canadians musicians:

Now, a Man of Two HUGE Bands…
After Soundgarden reunited in 2010 – Matt Cameron’s schedule would be compromised when both Soundgarden & Pearl Jam were active. In 2013…he had to decline touring with Soundgarden to keep his commitments to Pearl Jam for their Lightning Bolt tour.
