I’ve seen Arkells live so many times I can’t count the shows on my two hands and they never get old. You see, they became a band around the same time I was beginning my radio career. Oh, The Boss is Coming! was the soundtrack to my first year in radio (doing the less-than-glorious-behind-the-scenes-wire-rolling-equipment-lugging).
Then it came time to record my first Saturday morning 6 am shift (because really, how much could go wrong pre-recorded at 6am?) and Arkells were one of those first songs in my music log. I remember looking them up, liking their music, and deciding I need to ask our music director for a copy of Jackson Square, their first full-length album.
Since 2008, I’ve seen them on small stages and big, in and out of London. I remember watching them perform a late-night 3am set at Canadian Music Week and loving the vibe in the room so much! I guess I feel very connected to this band because they seem to follow me around, or maybe it’s me following them around…I’m still not sure! When I picked up and moved to Kingston for a new radio gig that would give me some more air-time, my FIRST Friday night after the big move, there they were, playing just down the road from my hotel room. Although I had no friends in this new city, I found familiarity in an Arkells show. Equally weird – my boyfriend and I became “a thing” at an Arkells show, so guys, thanks for getting the ball moving for two kids who kept showing up in the same places at the same time! Arkells have played at London Music Hall on my birthday and made my night sending out a little birthday shout-out to me after dropping by the studio that day. They’re just always there.
Another thing I love about this band – Arkells are truly devoted to their fans and getting them as close as possible to their music. From the recent Golden Ticket contest….
…to showing up to play a fan’s living room or porch ahead of Rock the Park a few years back…
They’re always finding a way to bring their fans along for the ride and it’s a beautiful thing to watch.
Now, into the Morning Report chapter of Arkells, I’m just as much a fan as a radio jock when it comes to these guys. I think it’s pretty cool that I am somewhere in this video at their Morning Report album release party back in August 2016 (the full project will be released soon but you can click on the image for a video sneak peek).
