Last nights Oscars mistakes got me thinking about on stage mishaps. Bands play hundreds of shows a year. Something is bound to go wrong on occasion. Here’s a few of the top ones… Well in my opinion.
- Van Halen Horribly Out Of Key
Lots of bands like to play to backing tracks. Personally I’m not the biggest fan of it. However it is a show and it’s all about the product. Trusting on someone to hit the spacebar can go horribly wrong sometimes. Then again the sound guy could play something so out of key it ruins the song. This happened to Van Halen back in 2007. They were playing “Jump” and something was seriously wrong. The backtrack was so out of pitch with the guitar is sounded like… like….. CRAP!!! Absolute crap.. I will let the video speak for itself.. This article —> HERE is a great read from the point of view from the crew.
2. James Hetfield Feels The Burn
1992 Metallica and Guns ‘n Roses are playing in Montreal. During Metallicas set James Hetfield was badly burned. It happened during the beginning of the song “Fade To Black”. The song starts out stellar as usual. Until the first big pyro blast. The band stops and you instantly know something is wrong. To add insult to injury. Axl Rose stopped the Guns show early prompting a riot in the streets. Metallica was then banned from playing Montreal for 10 years.
3. Dave Grohl Breaks His Leg
In 2015 The Foo Fighters were playing what appeared to be a standard (If you can call any Foo Fighters show standard) Foo show. When all of a sudden. Dave Grohl falls off stage and breaks his leg. In true Rock ‘N; Roll fashion. Dave came back on stage and finished the gig. Instead of cancelling the tour. Dave made the Throne of Guitars and sat upon his perch to bring us the rock.
4. Kurt Cobain Vs. Security Guard/ Dave Novoselic Vs. Bass
Why have one Nirvana moment when we can have two. 1991 Nirvana is playing a show in Texas. Kurt stage dives while still playing his guitar. The security guard tries to pull Kurt back. Kurt was not impressed and starts hitting the security guard with his guitar. WHen the security guard gets him back on stage he then goes for some” I can’t believe you just hit me with your guitar” revenge..
Now lets get to Krist. 1992 MTV Music Video Awards Krist has a moment with his bass. He tosses it up …. WAAAYYYYY Up in the air. Unfortunately he caught it with his forehead. You can see his instant regret.
5. Neil Youngs cocaine Snot Rocket
One of the most famous music films ever (In my opinion) is the Last Waltz. Martin Scorsese films the farewell show to “The Band”. When Neil Young came on stage to play “Helpless” . You could see a very large chunk of cocaine sticking out of his left nostril. It was so big they had to spend thousands of dollars to try and rotoscope it out of the final cut of the film. You can still see the shadowy figure of the “BLOW” in the final cut. CO8uld this be the most expensive bag of cocaine Neil ever purchased?..
