AM980 News
There's lots of Police activity in northwest London after a body was discovered inside a duplex on Blanchard Road.Police were called out to the home near Limberlost and Lawson just before 6AM Tuesday.  Police will only say they've launched a "death investigation" -- they've refused to confirm if this is a homicide investigation."At this point, it's too early to comment or make any determination as to what we have going on here." Constable Jane Crosby said.  "We'll be here as long as it takes, it could be several days, depending on what we have here."The home in question is a duplex at 1352 Blanchard Road. Police have closed Blanchard from Brunswick to Lawson and yellow Police tape surrounds the duplex. 2 forensic vans and six police cruisers are on scene.Police won't say who initially phoned in the tip, and information on the body has not been released either. The investigation has surprised those who live in the neighbourhood."It's usually quiet, and family oriented, people out walking their dogs." said Stephanie, who lives a few houses down."It's very quiet, lots of small children and new families starting out.  There's a baby next door.  Very, very ...

Plenty of Firsts on First Day Back to School
AM980 News
After a few months of summer fun and sleeping-in, school is back in session this morning for thousands of students in the London area.  It's also the kick-off for full-day kindergarten across Ontario, with over 1,500 kids in London already registered. Full-day kindergarten is being offered at 19 schools within the Thames Valley District School Board, including the new Stoney Creek Public School and Cleardale Public.  That's where Ontario Education Minister, Leona Dombrowksy, will join several local MPPS for a morning news conference.  The London District Catholic School Board is debuting the program in 5 schools this year. The province has pledged $200-million towards the all-day program this year, but critics say it's still unclear exactly how much the program is going to cost.  More local schools will introduce the program next year, and the government is promising that every school in Ontario will offer full-day kindergarten by 2015. The provincial curriculum also got an update over the summer. This fall, students will start to learn about things like online gambling and cyber-stalking in younger grades. Lessons on bullying will now be included in every grade, and issues of dating-violence and race-based violence will also be dealt with more directly. With the new school ...

Ontario Plans to Bring in Children's Activity Tax Credit
Canadian Press
Ontario plans to introduce a tax credit for parents who pay for their children's activities, Premier Dalton McGuinty announced on Monday, but critics have said the government is trying to undo the damage caused by the HST.While the plan would complement the federal children's fitness tax credit, unlike the federal program, Ontario's credit would include non-fitness activities, such as visual arts and language learning. The provincial tax credit would also be a refundable credit that benefits low incomes families.``It can be a real challenge for parents to make ends meet today, and this is one more way that we can help parents pay for those costs associated with raising healthy, active, engaged kids,'' McGuinty said at a YMCA in downtown Toronto. The government's proposed tax credit would allow parents to claim up to $500 of eligible expenses per child on sports, arts and other activities incurred on or after Jan. 1, 2010.Families would receive a refundable tax credit worth up to $50 per child under 16 years of age, and up to $100 for a child under the age of 18 with a disability, McGuinty said.``For our low income earners, even in cases when they're not ...

Free Overnight Street Parking in London Ends
AM980 News
After almost three months of being able to park your car on the street overnight without fear of getting a ticket, it's time to start making room at the end of your drive-way again. As of Tuesday morning, the popular trial program, which started back in mid-June, has come to an end.City of London Engineer, Pat McNally, tells AM980 it's too early to say if the program will return again next summer."Clearly that's a decision for council to make but from our point of view it worked fairly well. There were a few adjustments to be made on the streets right off the get-go but we eventually got that sorted out. It worked pretty well for the summer so if the council is happy and the residents are happy then we'll likely carry on going forward with that plan." said McNally.City officials are now in the process of preparing a report on the program for the Environment and Transportation Committee.McNally says, among other things, they're trying to determine how much money was lost as a result of allowing free overnight parking."When we entered into this we thought based on previous years there was probably $200,000 to $210,000 in revenue ...
