Second Arrest Made In Bosma Murder Case
AM980 News
Hamilton Police say they have arrested a second suspect in the Tim Bosma murder case. At a news conference early Wednesday afternoon, Superintendant Dan Kinsella told reporters that officers took 25-year-old Mark Smich of Oakville into custody at 10 a.m. that day. The man, who they said is known to police, will be formally charged with first-degree murder in the case Thursday when he appears in court at 9:30 a.m. Investigators confirmed that 27-year-old Dellen Millard, who also faces a first-degree murder charge in the case, and Smich are known to each other. During the afternoon news conference, Superintendant Kinsella also confirmed that investigators are still looking for a third suspect in the disturbing case and urged the person to come forward. No details further details were released about that third person. Tim Bosma went missing on the night of May 6th. The 32-year-old father and husband was trying to sell his 2007 Dodge Ram pick-up truck online and took two men for a test drive but never returned. His badly burned remains were found eight days later in the Waterloo-region on property owned by Dellen Millard. Kinsella told reporters that investigators were confident the only remains found in that ...

Western University Professor Discovers Breast Cancer Fighting Hormone
AM980 News
A major discovery in the field of breast cancer research, made here in London, could revolutionize the way doctors fight the deadly disease. A biology professor from Western University has identified new hormones in the body which may suppress breast cancer, and stimulate the regression of breast tumors. Of the nearly 1.4 million new cases of breast cancer diagnosed each year, almost half are characterized as hormone receptor negative, meaning they lack estrogen receptors (ER) and/or progesterone receptors (PR). Unfortunately, patients with receptor-negative tumors do not respond to current steroid hormone-based therapies, and can only be treated with chemotherapy or radiation. Professor John P. Wiebe and his team identified for the first time in human breast cancer cells that the progesterone metabolites 5a-dihydroprogesterone (5aP) and 3a-dihydroprogesterone (3aHP). They exhibit pro-cancer and anti-cancer effects on receptor-negative human breast cells. The team researched the hormones' ability to control initiation, growth and regression of ER/PR-negative human breast cell tumors. His discovery of the two new hormones found in the breast opens the door to new methods of treatment. "Our work shows that one can suppress, or that the tumours can actually regress, with the anti-cancer hormone. So it provides a new way of ...

CBS To Allow Blood Donations From Gay Men Under Heavy Restrictions
AM980 News
Canadian Blood Services is revising its rules on donations from gay men. It is lifting the lifetime ban, but stipulating that starting this summer, only men who have not had sex with other men within the last five years will be allowed to donate blood. Brian Lester, executive director of the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection in London, says CBS is moving in the right direction, but the condition of abstinence is baffling. "Regardless of what your sexual activity, your sexual orientation, the blood is screened,” Lester begins. “My understanding is that the science of screening is very, very effective and any blood that would be screened that would show that there is an issue within that blood – whatever the blood-born pathogen is that was in the blood donation – it would then not even be included." CBS is acknowledging that the length of the deferral will not satisfy all critics, but say it’s a ‘first step’. However, Lester says the condition of five years of abstinence is unnecessary. "It's a step forward but the advocacy will continue until we move to something more reasonable. There still is a discriminatory element to this and I do believe it's founded in homophobia." ...

Wynne Says No Byelections Until Budget Passes
AM980 News
Ontario's Premier is remaining tight-lipped about when voters in London and Windsor will head to the polls. She says she won't set the dates for two byelections until after the budget passes. However, Wynne did add that she'd rather set the dates before the August 15th deadline. The two seats were vacated in February by former cabinet ministers Dwight Duncan and Chris Bentley. The premier is set to visit both cities this week. On Tuesday, the New Democrats announced that they will support the budget to avoid a provincial election. Last fall, Bentley was at the centre of a contempt motion after the Liberals initially refused to release all documents relating to the governments decision to cancel two gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga. Premier Dalton McGuinty killed the contempt motion when he prorogued the legislature on Oct. 15th.

London's Top Cop Frustrated Over Disappearance Of Violent Sex Offender
AM980 News
London's Chief of Police says he's frustrated by the disappearance of a violent sex offender who's known to frequent our region. The province's Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement Squad issued an alert on Tuesday after 45-year-old Kenneth Froude of London left his halfway house in Kingston. He hasn't been seen in several days. Froude was serving a 19-month sentence for criminal harassment and breach of long-term supervision. Kenneth Froude, 45, is described as 5’11, 152 lbs, with brown eyes and greying hair This is the second time in as many years that Froude has skipped out on his parole and supervision orders. In April of 2012, the ROPE Squad issued a similar alert for Froude while he was out on parole after serving time for his 2004 sexual assault conviction. He went on the lam from his halfway house and was later tracked down in Masonville Mall where London Police arrested him. Police Chief Brad Duncan says London officers are on the lookout for Froude, but this situation is unfortunate. "Clearly it's frustrating when an individual who is on certain release conditions decides not to abide by them," he says. Duncan says it takes up a lot of police resources to track down offenders ...

Special Weather Statement Advises of Potentially Nasty Weather
AM980 News
A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada, advising of potentially nasty weather across the London region. No watches or warnings have been posted as of right now, but there is a risk of late afternoon, or early evening thunderstorms Wednesday with the potential for heavy downpours and frequent lightning. The threat of inclement weather was responsible for a decision to postpone Wednesday's elementary school track and field meet at SDCI until Friday. Don't forget, AM980 has live traffic and weather updates every 10 minutes during your morning and afternoon drive. Aside from a brief downpour in parts of the north end, London dodged the worst of Tuesday's storms which have left more than 3,000 people in Central Ontario without power almost 24 hours later. The utility expects repairs in the affected areas from cottage country north of Toronto east through the Bobcaygeon area to be completed by this evening.  In Orangeville, a vehicle was blown off a highway and into a ditch but police say it was due to strong winds and not a tornado. Near Alliston, several people were reportedly stranded in vehicles that were hit by falling hydro poles along County Road 10. No injuries were ...

London Knights Suffer Humiliating 9-2 Defeat at Memorial Cup
AM980 News
The London Knights are used to handing out beat downs -- not taking them. The Knights were on the wrong end of a rout Tuesday night as the Halifax Mooseheads dismantled the London Knights 9-2 in the final round-robin game at the tournament for both teams. "It's one of those games where they jumped on us early," said Knights coach Dale Hunter, whose team lost 6-3 to Portland a night earlier and were also involved in grueling seven-game Ontario Hockey League final. "It happens. I've been on a bigger playing field than this and a few times this kind of game has happened." Hunter is confident the Knights can rebound, just like they did when they faced adversity in the OHL playoffs against Plymouth and Barrie. The Knights also lost 8-1 to Windsor earlier this season and responded with a win the next game. Hunter says the loss to Portland on Monday was a factor. "They're tired, they played the night before and they battled back that game to tie the game up so we took a lot of energy to do that and tonight we didn't have the energy we needed to play well."Jake Patterson, who was making ...

Hundreds Expected to Attend Public Memorial for Tim Bosma
AM980 News
While the investigation into his murder continues, hundreds will gather in Hamilton Wednesday morning to pay their final respects to Tim Bosma. A public memorial has been planned for the 32 year old Ancaster man, whose remains were found burned beyond recognition a week after he went missing. An industrial incinerator has been recovered from a farm owned by 27 year old Dellen Millard, charged with first degree murder in Bosma's death, although police have not confirmed it is linked to the case. There were earlier reports from the CBC quoting law enforcement officials that additional remains had been found on the property, but Hamilton Police said Tuesday that no other remains have been found "anywhere" and that the report needed to be "cleared up." Police in Toronto have confirmed they are reviving two additional cases linked to Millard, the wealthy heir to an aviation company founded by his grandfather. Officer will be taking a closer look at the death of Millard's father Wayne, which was initially ruled a suicide. He reportedly died of a gunshot wound last November in the Toronto home the two shared. Millard continued to live there until he was arrested. Police are also revisiting 23 year ...
