There won't be a provincial election this spring afterall.NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says she'll ensure passage of the provincial budget, avoiding an election. She made the announcement during a Tuesday morning news conference. The minority Liberals need the NDP onside to pass the budget, which is a confidence motion. The Progressive Conservatives are pushing for an election and said they'd never support the budget, even before they read it. The Liberals addressed a long list of NDP demands in the budget, but Horwath said she wanted more accountability. Last week, Premier Kathleen Wynne agreed to Horwath's extra demand for a financial accountability office, modelled on the parliamentary budget office in Ottawa. Horwath has also asked for ombudsman oversight of the health-care sector, such as hospitals and nursing homes, and a halt to so-called high-occupancy toll lanes.

Rescuers dug through the debris of destroyed homes, schools and businesses Tuesday in a desperate search for survivors of the murderous tornado that blasted through Moore, Oklahoma killing at least 24 people and injuring scores more.
Of the two dozen killed, nine are reportedly children.
The newest death toll estimate was dramatically reduced after earlier reports that at least 51 people had died Monday.
Amy Elliot, spokeswoman for the state medical examiner's office, said she believes some victims were counted twice in the early chaos after the storm cut a path more than a mile wide through this Oklahoma City suburb of 41,000 people. But she said the death toll could climb.
In Moore, everyone was a first responder. When the storm destroyed the Plaza Towers Elementary School, rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain of parents and neighborhood volunteers. Parents carried children in their arms to a triage center in the parking lot.
Firefighter Russ Locke was among those who helped search through the school's crushed remains, where about 75 students and staff had huddled when the tornado hit. Several children were killed there; others were pulled alive from the wreckage.
"You have your own kids, and ...
