Safe Schools a must!

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Dalton McGuinty introduced new legislation to add cyber-bullying to the list of offences for which a student can be suspended or expelled from an Ontario school today. Changes to the province's Safe Schools Act were introduced to stop students from posting comments, pictures or videos attacking another student or teacher on sites such as YouTube, Myspace and Facebook.

It's the first time either physical or online bullying will be formally prohibited in provincial schools. Bullying is not currently listed as an infraction, and it's about time that we recognized the seriousness of these behaviours.

I find that surprising that IT'S NOT currently worth a suspension. That is shocking to me.

Personally, I think it's good to see changes being made in our education system as a reflection of the times. Our parents didnt have to worry about you or I name calling someone online but that is not the current situation.

Although this new legislation is being introduced mainly to stop bullying on school property, I think it's a stretch to apply it after hours. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the parents to know what their children are doing online. I dont think we necessarily need our Principals intervening where it should be the parent's responsibility to monitor their childrens online activity.

If school and home worked together, what a safer place it would be for our kids.
