I, Robot ....I, Scary

A subject on today's afternoon show was ROBOTS. Good, bad or just plain scary? And we aren't talking the Jetsons here.

In the news today, South Korea may establish the first government backed ethical code for robots. You know, so they don't like kill us n stuff. The countrys Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said yesterday it hoped to publish a Robot Ethics Charter for manufacturers and users to be programmed into robots. The move anticipates the day when robots, particularly intelligent service robots, could become a part of daily life, the ministry said.

A recent South Korean government report forecast that robots would routinely carry out surgery by 2018. The country has plans to develop robots capable of looking after the elderly, perform household chores and to stand guard over the border with North Korea with the ability to fire weapons automatically.

There is more to this story found in the National Post today. But, Wow. This is what they are forecasting the technology will be like within 10 to 15 years! The whole idea of a robot being able to fire a gun automatically is quite frightening. I like to consider myself to be a progressive thinker but this sort of technology can be unsettling in terms of warfare.
