TEGAN AND SARA backstage by Dunner.
Prior to their show in London, I had a chance to sit down backstage and chat with Tegan and Sara about their new record, The Con. The Con features 14 original songs, evenly written between the two sisters at 7 songs apiece. It was produced at the home of Chris Walla from Death Cab For Cutie in Portland.
I spent a good hour that afternoon at Centennial Hall and here are a few interesting facts about them:
-They like the cheese flavoured Rice Crisps.
-They do their laundry on tour, including a stop at an unknown Laundromat somewhere in London. Our interview was pushed back a 1/2 hr due to an unruly dryer.
-Our interview was very casual, in fact, Sara was wearing a green tracksuit and Tegan was dressed in ripped jeans and a hoodie. I was naked. Ok, no I wasn't.
-Everyday, they are shipped boxes of t-shirts and their merch girl has to go through and count hundreds of shirts.
-They paid for the making of The Con: The Movie, so don't be so cheap and buy the deluxe edition which includes the bonus DVD.
-They have a very nice Tour Manager named Joe, who previously worked with Ben Folds for 9 years.
-Even if the show is sold out, always check for last minute tickets like artist and label holds (thanks Joe).
-When it's time for sound check, their Sound Manager plays Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" - the cue to get on stage.
-You can easily tell them a part by their personalities and Tegan has the libret.
-There are lots of people sitting backstage, waiting, and doing more waiting and then still some more waiting for the show.
