Colorado tragedy

Thursday, September 28, 2006

Yesterday during my shift the story broke about the Colorado standoff. A gunman took six girls hostage at the high school in Bailey, using them as human shields for hours before he shot and fatally wounded Emily Keyes and then killed himself as a SWAT team moved in.

As I followed this story I struggled to contain my sadness. Lynn Bigham, who said she was a family friend, said the girl had just turned 16. "I've been praying she'll be OK," she said. "She's real bubbly. Every time you see her, she gives you a hug." A bubbly, bright 16 year old girl was killed in this madness yesterday.

What is also disturbing is that yet again we are seeing a separation of the boys from the girls, as the gunman forced the male students to leave the classroom. He chose only female students to violate, an outright act of violence against young women.

Being in the media really propels you into hearing the details first hand, often things you would rather not know. In addition to our sources, I was watching CNN follow the story too, and the way news is presented really upsets me. I couldnt help but notice the announcers kept their composure. Which is typical in news, show no emotion. Why, when we are all collectively shaken? These are kids we are talking about! Where are the tears and empathy? Where is the outrage, the anger, the natural emotions that you feel when you hear about something like this happening? I want to hear people step up and say THIS CAN'T HAPPEN.

A family just lost their daughter and a 16 year old lost her life. Im disheartened.
