Well I looked into something I saw on the show and sure enough it was one of those crazy links to a forum about lost but this forum was fairly new. But what it was about, was the comic book that john didn't pick in the show. So I looked into it and well, what I found has made more sense than anything else. The comic book was the one that was on of the items Rupert layed out for young John Locke to choose from. Basically the forum included information on that particular comic book and the censors
