Ron Lancaster was a CFL legend. One of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the league. Nicknamed "The Little General" Ron sits second all-time on the CFL's list with with 3,384 pass completitions, 6,223 pass attempts and 50,535 yards passing. Astounding numbers.
Before working here at FM96, I worked at a station in Hamilton. We did a lot of stuff with the CFL's Hamilton Ticats and Ron. Some members of the media didn't see eye to eye with him, but he'd join our morning show every week to talk about the Ticats. He'd tell it like it was and hold nothing back.
I got fired from that job. One of the first people to call me was Ron Lancaster. He'd call weekly to make sure I was doing alright and to offer support. Here's a CFL legend, a Grey Cup champion, calling little ole me to offer any help he could. I couldn't believe that he'd take the time out of his day to call me. I thought it was pretty cool that I had his home phone number in my contact list.
Ron passed away this morning. We always talked about playing a round of golf together, unfortunately we never will. I'm not going to claim that Ron and I were best friends, but it meant a lot that he'd call me weekly, it was of no benefit to him. Ron was a spectacular football player, but an even better person. RIP...
