I make sure to watch the Grammys ever year. Sure it's the biggest night in music, but usually I get to complain about how bad it is. This year, I can't do that. I thought it was really good. Just some of my thoughts about what went on....
It opens with a nice duet between Alicia Keys & the Late Frank Sinatra. Just a great song and it shows that great songs are timeless. She also showed later with her performance that is the real deal.
The Time into Rihanna with what is one of the best written songs I've heard in a long time. "Umbrella" doesn’t need to be over produced like it is. Find her stripped down version online and you'll see what I mean.
Okay so can they do a Beatles tribute every year? I don't know why it takes me something like that to remember just how good the Beatles are. I haven't seen "Across The Universe" yet...but I think I will have to now. Also "Love" is going to find its way back into my CD player. If you don't own more than four Beatles records I would say that you need to hit the record shop soon.
Kanye & Daft Punk had a great performance. "Stronger" is just an anthem. "Graduation" as a whole is an amazing record. It was nice to see him pick up Best Rap record. It's well deserved. I also really liked the tribute to his Late Mother. I must say it was the right call to cut the music after he won and was giving credit to his Mom. A very classy move by who ever is charge of trying to rush them outta there by playing the music. Say what you will about Kanye, he's a great artist.
Okay but when you're paying tribute to some of the best female singers of all time and you lip sync doesn’t it kind of step on the point. Beyonce can sing, she proved that 2 minutes afterward when she did sing with Tina Turner. Also quit plugging your songs during your tribute. Yes we know that it's "To the Left, To The Left". Over all I can say that I was impressed with the Beyonce & Tina Turner duet. It was pretty bland.
On to another performance that really didn't work. I'm the biggest Foo fan out there. But the whole "My Grammy Moment" just didn't work. I thought that if it was done right it would have been really cool to have the backing orchestra on "The Pretender". But something was just off. I'm not really sure what. Really it could have been many things. But it just didn't work out to well. Give them credit for trying, but yeah just didn't work out. They did win "Best Rock Album". This is well deserved to say the least. I still love that record and if you don’t own it yet go and get it. While you are they pick up Springsteen's "Magic". He won three Grammys as well and the album is very very good.
Fiest is one of the Canadian artists that you should know by now and if you don't well her stripped down version of "1,2,3,4" is a very nice intro. She went 0 for 4 last night but I think we'll see her win a Grammy in the future. You can bet she'll be walking away with more than a few Junos.
Long Long & Herbie Hancock were unreal. A side note as well Long Long in China is a huge star. I mean huge. He can't walk down the street there. He would get mobbed much like Bono would walking down the street here. Back to the performance. What can I say? Just pure talent.
Okay but is it fair to put Josh Groban & Andrea Bocelli together on one stage? Two of the best voices in the world. Which they proved once again.
On to the night's big winner, Amy Whinehouse. I haven't heard her record, but I guess I should give it a listen since she won five Grammys!!! Yeah five! Her performance was a bit awkward at times. I don't know if she was nervous or still working her way away from the drugs. Hopefully she gets clean and continues to put out great music.
