Pasqualina says NO to Toronto's trash!

Monday, September 04, 2006

Right Now London is a possible drop off spot for Garbage&.from TORONTO! Toronto ships a million tonnes of garbage a year! What the heck has happened? When I was a little girl I never even though about garbage as a problem. You just threw away your wrappers, boxes and brothers toys and whatever else could fit, not even caring where it went. I thought that whatever you put in the magic garbage bin would miraculously vanish like the cookies the cookie monster ate on sesame street. Ok I may have lost some of you there&

Today we have to worry about where to put it. We even have the S.W.O.T- Southwestern Ontario Trash Coalition which our Mayor sits on. I am definitely opposed to having our beautiful forest city be the dumping ground for it&BUT the lack of space is just a symptom of the bigger problem. Why do we produce so much garbage? I am not asking to pay per garbage bag put on the curb. I do think that our governments need to have a better recycling program. Guelph and Edmonton are doing a great job. I think that we have to play an active role in controlling how much garbage we create. The way I see it is we only have one Earth and if we dont take action it will get stinky.

What do you think about our role in garbage? Do you think we should start to think of a solution to the existing problem or just not have the garbage in our back yard? Is it the governments responsibility to have better recycling and garbage programs? Do you think as individuals we have to be accountable? Do you think that we should be able to throw away whatever we want in the magic bin?
