Pit Bulls...It's not the dog it's the owner??

Thursday, June 01, 2006

During Tazmania I stated that if pit bull owners use the "it's not the dog it's the owner argument" then the owner should be totally responsible for any of the dog's actions. Here is what some FM96 listeners thought of that comment:

I own three pitbulls. I am a responsible owner. I educated myself about the breed and train and raise them accordingly. They are raised with discipline and love. These dogs are my children. My life is complete and happy because of these dogs. They are extremely affectionate and compassionate to all who enter my home.

I know that the things that have happened are terrible but there is always human error attributed to these incidents.

I am extremely upset that someone lost their life this week due to their own dog, it's horrible. Not to take away from the tragedy but it concerns me that 1. The dog was never taken to the vet in the time it was owned, 2. The dog was not registered and abiding by the bylaws of Ontario, 3. The owners knew there was a sign of aggression in this dog but did not exercise appropriate precautions and 4. A dog of that size and muscle really should not be in a home where both owners are elderly.

You may not agree with what I've said but this how I feel.

These dogs are not to blame.

Taz...I agree with you!

I feel that before any real argument can be made on any given subject by anyone, the individual should perhaps have some actual knowledge on the topic based on valid research from unbiased sources.

People who say that pitbulls are just innocent dogs and that their owners, combined with bad training methods, or no training at all, are the primary reason for these deadly attacks, are people who's opinions are based on misinformation or even worse, wrong information.

The pitbull breed is one that has been bred for centuries to be a killer dog! Pitbulls' jaws are a mass of bone & muscle stronger than that of any other dog, enabling it to put thousands of pounds per square inch of pressure on it's victim! To tear it's victim apart. Those are only two accurate statistics about pitbulls based on research.

Although I am not a dog expert, I am a dog lover and I have done my research because when I hear of a child being savagely attacked by a pitbull my heart breaks. I also happen to know a young woman who almost lost her life in an attack by three very young pitbulls in Brantford and she's still undergoing intense physiotherapy and having surgeries 3 years later and will suffer from that attack for the rest of her life.

Would a fluffy wild wolf puppy make a nice pet? Or how about one of those cute little black bear cubs for the kiddies?

Any dog can bite; but pitbulls are not like any other dog.

Pit bulls viciously attack and shred flesh and break bones untill the job is done.

Owning a pitbull is irresponsible to say the least.
