There is something that I have been noticing a lot more since I have been reading the news for a living…and that is that A LOT of athletes have names that are pronounced NOTHING like the way they are spelled.
My point was proven last night as I was watching the Red Wings/Blackhawks game. There was a Chicago player whose name is Dustin Byfluglien…how, you ask, should his name phonetically be pronounced? Well common sense would dictate…. BY- Flu-g-Lee-En… right…NO! NOT EVEN CLOSE…his last name is pronounced BUFF-Lyn…WTF??? Other example I have come across over the years…Jason Spezza of the Ottawa Senators…is Jason SPETZ-za??? Former leaf Karl Pilar…pronounced PEE-Lash…I get that all different people have all different sounding last names but the NHL could send me a little yearly guide on how to correctly say new players names, that would save me a lot of time surfing wikipedia!
Thanks
Sarah Kelly pronounced Kennedy J
