The Killers released their fifth album Wonderful Wonderful back in September of 2017.
So far we’ve enjoyed the singles “The Man” and “Run For Cover.” Today the band released a music video for the side one, track three cut, “Rut.”
Brandon Flowers was talking on Song Exploder about his 2014 solo album and tour. During the tour he wanted to have this non-album song that he would begin each show with as an introduction. Each night the lyrics would change base don which city he was in.
Fast forward to Wonderful Wonderful and Brandon went back to that original chord progression and put it together for the new album. Flowers brought the song to the band and they all put their mark on.
Lyrically, he dived into the story of his wife Tana Mundkowsky. He talked about his family needing to move pout of Las Vegas which to him his weird. He said that he grew up loving to Las Vegas, but without getting into her personal story, she has a remarkably different take on Las Vegas and so they needed to move. The song is about her PTSD and loneliness and Flowers is singing the song from her perspective. They even pitched up Flowers’ vocals to give him a more feminine sound.
it is a beautiful song with an uplifting message.
“Don’t give up on me, cuz I’m just in a rut.”
